Every 2 years Malestroit hosts a Medieval Fete. This is a weekend long extravaganza and attracts several thousand people . We are offering a special cruise to cover this weekend and it will include passes to every event. It is hard to list everything that happens, but to name a few; Street entertainers and musicians, medieval and Breton dancing and music, a demonstration of working siege engines, a display of ancient firearms and canon, (very noisy!), a huge tented village on 'The digue' which is a semi-island on the outskirts of Malestroit where all the exhibitors live a totally medieval life for the weekend. There are tents selling typical hand made medieval style pottery, woodwork, clothing, archery equipment etc etc. Then there are displays of jousting and horsemanship. Metal smelting, iron working, Fresian horses (a favourite here), armour, stone carving. The list goes on and on and the spectacle will cover over 6 Hectares. As well as all this, the shopkeepers, Innkeepers and other locals dress up in period costume too. It's a fascinating experience and not one to be missed. This year, as well as past attractions, there will be an appearance by a team of English longbow archers, including the double Guinness world record holder for long distance archery.
You can get a flavour of the event by watching a re-run of a French TV3 program made at the last event. click on this link to see the program (in French).

Our Itinerary for the week's cruise.

Day 1. Join the ship on the afternoon of Wednesday 17th August. This will be at the pretty little port of Peillac downstream of Malestroit. Enjoy a welcome dinner on board.

Day 2 Thursday. We take a short cruise up to the village of St.Martin sur Oust where we provide an excursion to the remarkably pretty medieval small town of Rochefort-en Terre . Rochefort won the prettiest village competition so many times that they were eventually banned from entering! Rochefort has many antique and local produce shops. .On our way to StMartin we pass through what must be the most beautifully decorated lock in Brittany if not France. The floral display here is just stunning. Rochefort-en-terre
Brittany's prettiest lock?
Day 3 Friday. A gentle and relaxing cruise through pastoral scenery up to Malestroit. We pass through natural woodland and are on winding river all the way. A great chance to spot Kingfishers and other birdlife. We tie up just above Malestroit after passing through the town and past the old convent. No doubt we will see the preparations for the festival in full swing as we pass 'The Digue'. The old convent Malestroit.
Days 4 and 5, Saturday and Sunday. Enjoy the full experience of this festival.(Full weekend passes to all areas of the fete are included)There is simply no way you can take it all in in one day.
Day 6 Monday We cruise 'up country' into less tamed countryside, stopping at small villages as the fancy takes us. As a change from the bustle of the festival we moor in the 'middle of nowhere' at a scenic and peaceful spot for the evening.
Day 7. Continue our cruise up to the historic town of Josselin with its stunning chateau where you disembark. After a wander around this gorgeous town, we take you back to our agreed rail station or airport. Approaching Josselin
