Your hosts

Ian and Jane Slade spent many years chartering sea boats on the West Coast of Scotland. Ian is a qualified commercial diver and used our first boat, a converted fishing boat, to take parties of divers round the Scottish islands. We then ran a 50' luxury motor yacht offering just 4 guests cruises around the islands.It was whilst we were spending a winter with that boat in Northern Ireland using it as a unique one table restaurant, that Jane won the Country Living Magazine's 'Professional Cook of the Year' award.

We then spent ten years ashore running a successful bed and breakfast business (during which time Jane won the regional Tesco Seafood cooking championship ) on the Hebridean island of Mull in Scotland. Now we have moved to France and once more find ourselves afloat and offering guests the chance to share our enthusiasm for these waterways. We also used to run our own furniture restoration business, which has come in handy, and Jane is also a fully qualified nurse. Jane amongst her many other interests was also a crew member of the Tobermory offshore lifeboat for more than 12 years.

Our 'philosophy'

We enjoy exploring the waterways of France, its villages, towns, wines, shops and meeting its people. We hope to share some of this with you as guests on our floating home; the Libje,and we hope that we can all explore this fantastic region and its treasures together.

After several years of searching for the right barge , we finally found Libje in Hamburg. After taking her to Holland we spent the next 2 years converting her into a hotel ship.
Now we can offer just four guests a unique experience on the tranquil canals of Brittany.

Libje is equipped with all required safety equipment and Ian has passed the skippers qualifications to pilot large barges on European waterways. We are a French registered company (sarl).

Our Journey so far has taken us from Northern Germany to Friesland in the north of Holland for a major re-fit. Then after more than 18 months of work we headed south through Belgium,the French Ardennes and then down through the Vosges to the Saone, the mighty Rhone, the Camargue and the south of France and then on to the Canal du Midi. In the autumn of 2009 we then travelled north- west again to Bordeaux and then finally a sea journey to reach the beautiful river/canal system of Brittany.

We should point out that there are two additional small crew, namely our two dogs Millie & Pippa. Two very friendly mutts well used to guests after years and years in a B&B environment. It will be your choice whether to allow them below decks or keep them confined to the wheelhouse. They have never been allowed in the guest cabins. If you don't like dogs at all, we have alternative accommodation for them ashore for the duration of your cruise.
